Felipe Calderón was born on August 18, 1962, in Morelia, Mexico. He obtained a law degree from the Escuela Libre de Derecho, and an MA in Economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and in another Public Administration from Harvard University.
President Calderón has served in a variety of capacities during his career in politics. He first ran for elected office in 1988, when he succeeded in becoming a local deputy for Mexico City. He went on to become a Federal Deputy for Mexico City (1991-94), serving as Secretary of the Trade Commission during the NAFTA negotiations. He also served as both the Secretary General (1993-95) and President (1996-99) of the National Action Party (PAN).
Felipe Calderón was chosen as the presidential candidate for the PAN in 2005 and was elected on July 2, 2006. He was sworn in as the President of the United Mexican States on December 1, 2006.
